Project notes

A few jobs that show how grades behave outside the swatch book.

What the jobs taught the desk

Project notes are not awards reels. They are short records of grades that behaved (or misbehaved) outside the swatch book: wine cartons on soft-touch in Stellenbosch, chrome and Prism Holo seals for a Sandton beauty drop, LeatherMark on Cape Town wallets, Diffraction Beam strips for Midrand pharma.

Each case links back to the product and application that carried the job. Temperatures, release choices and substrate gotchas show up in plain language so the next converter does not repeat the same make-ready tax.

Export packaging out of Durban taught us to ask about transit scuff earlier. Publisher cloth covers in Johannesburg reminded everyone that antique gold reads differently under gallery spots than under shop fluorescents. Appliance badges in East London needed PlasticBond with corona notes written on the PO, not buried in a chat.

If you are briefing something similar, steal the structure: stock, press, finish target, known risks. Then mail foil@stampingfoil.co.za with your own constraints. We would rather adjust a grade than chase a photo that never ran on a South African floor.

Browse showrooms if you want to feel the swatch before you commit, and finishes when the creative team is still arguing bright versus antique.

Retail gift sleeves taught us pigment solid seasonal colours need tighter ΔE talk when the same pink returns next year. Museum tickets with Prism Holo needed sequential numbering planned with the security lot, not after. Wedding invite suites still surprise people who think bright gold is one SKU.

Use these notes as pattern libraries. Your substrate and press will differ. The value is knowing which questions we asked before the first sheet, not copying a temperature from another factory.

We omit client secrets and exact pricing on purpose. What stays is process. If a note feels thin, ask for a call; some jobs cannot be written without giving away a brand's next launch.

Pharma and security jobs may omit photos entirely. In those cases the note stays textual. Trust that the process lessons still transfer even when the pack cannot be shown.
